Psychology of religion and adolescents in the United States: Past to present
Article Abstract:
Puritan settlers came to America seeking liberty for their religious expression and growth, and their concerns with religious issues continue in contemporary science. Early psychologists devoted much energy to the psychology of religion, but the subject became dormant from around 1930 to 1960. The resurgence of interest in science and religion from the 1960s was reflected in the formation of societies and the publication of journals. The narrow view of science with an overemphasis on methods to the neglect of concerns for the human being, has resulted in a neglect of religion in journals and introductory textbooks. Those concerned with psychology of religion have called for collaboration of science and religion.

Religious involvement and adolescent psychosocial development
Article Abstract:
A study was undertaken of African-American and European-American students in the 11th grade, to determine if religious involvement was linked to psychosocial maturity of adolescents as understood by Erikson's psychosocial theory. The association of ego strengths of hope, will, purpose, fidelity, love and care, with various forms of religious involvement were found to be most apparent for European-Americans. Higher ethnic identity was linked with being African-American, particularly for those more religiously involved.

Religious development in adolescence
Article Abstract:
There is evidence of renewed psychological interest in religion, and of the religious development of adolescents in particular, and the value of including different racial groups has been demonstrated. Studies raise many questions and issue and demonstrate the richness of qualitative methods and hermeneutic approaches to interpretation. Unique opportunities for research into religious behaviour and development are also presented by the approaching millennium and its religious overtones.
