Psychotherapy consultation: taking the transference
Article Abstract:
The transference-countertransference relationship between patient and psychotherapist may be useful if handled in a way that allows for patient and therapist growth. Third party consultations can often shed light on the relationship difficulties, as in the case of an analyst who found herself unable to progress in sessions because of her patient's helplessness relating to his mother's death. An analyst must at times learn to accept the transference, furthering the emotional development of both parties.

Psychosis as the sickness unto death: treatment impasse, consultation, and resolution
Article Abstract:
A therapist recounts a case where transference-countertransference led to an impasse and the need to have a third party consultant. The sessions had been unproductive due to the patient's negativity and the therapist's disinterestedness in the verbal interaction. The patient wanted reassurance that treatment would cure his psychotic episodes but continually provoked the therapist by stating she was ineffectual, leaving the therapist with feelings of impotence and indifference.

On not being enough and the therapist's ego ideal
Article Abstract:
A psychotherapist discusses his relationship with a patient and his unwitting re-creation of cycles of dependency within the therapy sessions. Both patient and therapist came to feel that attitudes and behaviors were being forced upon them, that of victim and assaulter, respectively. Through an acknowledgment of the patient's needs, the therapist was able to circumvent the behavior that made the sessions an outlet for misdirected emotions.
