Article Abstract:
The S.E. Solomon, E.D. Rothblum, and K. F. Balsam's (2004) study provides excellent descriptive and comparative data about the first cohort of same-sex couples seeking civil unions in Vermont. The framework emphasizes three external risk factors faced by lesbian and gay couples in American society and the negative internal consequences when partners are unable to cope with these external challenges successfully.

Pioneers in partnership: lesbian and gay male couples in civil unions compared with those not in civil unions and married heterosexual siblings
Article Abstract:
Lesbian and gay male couples in civil unions in Vermont are compared with those not in civil unions and married heterosexual siblings in the first study on same-sex couples with civil unions. The results at a time of legal changes for same-sex couples indicate that legalized same-sex relationships are related to visibility of same-sex couples to their family and the general public.
