Social exchange in the labor market: reciprocity and trust versus egoistic money maximization
Article Abstract:
The accuracy of standard economic theory and social exchange theory in predicting employer-employee relations and wages in the labor market are studied. Standard economic theory suggests that wages are solely dependent on labor demand and supply. On the other hand, social exchange theory assumes a norm of reciprocity in social interactions wherein low wages translate into reduced efforts while high wages increase efforts.
