Somatisation in children
Article Abstract:
Somatization in childhood is due in some cases to limited cognitive verbal signals limiting the expression of emotions and to minor physiological dysfunction. An abundance of mental and physical health problems in the family contributes towards childhood somatization. Somatization is also linked to emotional distance combined with a family closeness regarding health issues as well as abnormal childhood social relationships. and anomalies in childhood social relationships. Treatment involves cognitive-behavioral and family techniques and good paediatric advice.

Practitioner review: Assessment and management of somatisation in childhood and adolescence: A practical perspective
Article Abstract:
Research completed in 1991 revealed that between 2% and 10% of all children experience aches and pains for which a cause cannot be identified. Somatic symptoms can be a result of psychological difficulty or distress and can include stomach aches, head aches, low energy, nausea, back ache, blurred vision and intolerance to food. Family work is recommended for the treatment of the symptoms, while antidepressants may be necessary where comorbid mood disorders exist.
