Text-based database searching
Article Abstract:
The voluminous information available to molecular biologists requires a system of search methods to sift through the tons of information in order to retrieve relevant data for a particular research. Investigators can either search using descriptive words or nucleotide or protein sequences. There are three important retrieval systems using the descriptive search mode. These are Entrez, Sequence Retrieval System and DBGET. Basic and advanced strategies in using these retrieval systems are discussed.

Computational gene finding
Article Abstract:
The search for functional sites in a genomic library is a challenging task. There are tools that can be used to make this search easier. Investigators have used signal sensors and content sensors in their search for functional genes. Signal sensors detect local sites such as start and stop codons, splicing regions, promoters, terminators and the like. Content sensors identify sequences containing coding regions. Integrated gene finding methods use both signal and content sensors in genefinding.

Multiple-alignment & -sequence searches
Article Abstract:
Multiple nucleotide sequence comparisons often reveal gene functions not clearly seen with simple studies of homology. There are important parameters that must be considered in undertaking multiple-alignment and multiple-sequence studies. These are sequence gathering, generation of multiple alignment and profile searches. An example based on paralogs from Caenorhabditis elegans and some pitfalls to avoid are discussed.
