The ambiguity of transference
Article Abstract:
The term 'transference' had been used for the first time by Freud, who did not restrict it only to analytical situations but regarded it as a pervading characteristic in human relations. Freud felt that specific characteristics of psychoanalysis made transference the appropriate term both for the emergence and the resolution of transferential displacements. The essential ambiguity of the concept of transference and the way the ambiguity is reflected in various theoretical interpretations are discussed.

Ambiguity in the psychoanalytic practice
Article Abstract:
Psychoanalysis, following a different logic from that of the natural sciences, encourages ambiguity and multiple meanings. For structurally sound patients able to deal with multiple meanings, ambiguity is conjunctive, additive and integrative. Many patients present disorders of ambiguity symptomatic of problems of self-other differentiation. For these patients, ambiguity results in a disjunction and projection or introjection of the unassimilated meaning.

Ambiguity in the psychoanalytic process: discussion
Article Abstract:
Dr Mario Rendon rightly points out the importance of ambiguity in psychoanalysis. The field contains many dualisms which make an ability to tolerate ambiguity essential for analysts as well as a goal for patients. However, in his clinical examples of ambiguity Dr Rendon focuses too much on cognition, without considering unconscious conflicts that may be affecting the patients' reactions.
