The cognitive development of 5-year-old children of postnatally depressed mothers
Article Abstract:
Maternal postnatal depression lacks any adverse impact on the children's cognitive development at five years of age. Postnatal depression even fails to adversely effect the vulnerable group of children from low socio-economic status. However, poor and insensitive mother-infant interactions during the early postnatal period is associated with persistence of poor cognitive functioning. Environmental circumstances such as, social class, stimulation at home and schooling experience also affect child's cognitive performance. Issues related to sensitive developmental periods are discussed.

The socioemotional development of 5-year-old children of postnatally depressed mothers
Article Abstract:
Research has revealed connections with psychological adjustment among children of postnatally depressed mothers. The study included a sample of 58 postnatal women identified as depressed and 42 well women, who were assessed between 2 and 18 months postpartum and re-assessed at five years. Links were identified between maternal depression and the child's behaviour with the mother, play content and social interaction, and behavioural problems at home.
