The illusion of morality as self-interest: a reason to cooperate in social dilemmas
Article Abstract:
Most people generally believe they will eventually benefit from cooperation in social dilemmas, possibly because they confuse long-term self-interest with long-term group interest. The self-interest illusion may be beneficial as it produces cooperation, but may be harmful as it could encourage people to act in the interests of their immediate group as opposed to wider groups. People may believe cooperation is beneficial because the myth is convenient even if untrue.
