The impact of paternal alcoholism and maternal social position on boys' school adjustment, pubertal maturation and sexual behavior: a test of two competing hypotheses
Article Abstract:
One theory holds that stressful environments can lead to early pubertal maturation while another posits that stress can postpone the commencement of puberty instead of accelerating it. A study examined these two hypotheses using paternal alcoholism and maternal social position as indicators of family stress. Findings supported both hypotheses. Paternal alcoholism resulted in delayed male pubertal onset but also led to more frequent sexual intercourse and more sexual partners. High level of maternal social position functioned as a protective element for school placement of boys with an alcoholic father. Findings suggested more complicated links than expected.

Supporting fathers and supported mothers in families with disruptive boys: who are they?
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the characteristics of fathers and mothers in a family with disruptive boys showed that both paternal and maternal behavior were better predictors of disruptiveness than one or the other alone. Age, IQ, education, marital satisfaction and symptoms of distress were used as predictors of support. Both spouses' accounts of parental care were accurate predictors of fathers' supportive and unsupportive conduct towards mothers.

Teacher ratings of children's behaviours and teachers' management styles: a research note
Article Abstract:
There is a remarkable change in teachers' ratings of aggressive-hyperactive behaviours from kindergarten to grade one where the management style of teachers are different. Teachers' management style has to be taken into account while evaluating behaviour problems in school. The study of 1,573 boys and girls took into consideration aggressive-hyperactivity, anxiety-withdrawal and social skills deficits.
