The relations of empathy-related emotions and maternal practices to children's comforting behavior
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the relationship between children's comforting behavior and their personal distress reactions and markers of sympathy. The relation between comforting behavior and maternal empathy-related emotions and maternal child-rearing practices was also examined. Results confirmed that children's reactions to a sympathy stimulus is postively correlated to their reactions to a baby cry and their helping behavior. A positive relationship was also found between the level of girls' comforting behavior and their mothers perspective taking and use of problem-solving and discussion. Boys' comforting was related only to mothers' reinforcement.

Children's coping in self- and other-relevant contexts
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the coping strategies adopted by children in contexts in which they experience negative events themselves and in which they observe others undergo negative experiences. Results revealed that when negative events happen to other children, children tended to adopt instumental coping strategies. In other-relevant contexts, however, children displayed a tendency to exhibit distracting and avoidant behavior, cry, or seek support from other individuals. Older childen were found to have less-reliance on support-related strategies, resorting instead to cognitive restructuring, cognitive avoidance and problem-solving.

Preschoolers' effortful control and negative emotionality, immediate reactions to disappointment, and quality of social functioning
Article Abstract:
Relations among effortful control/low negative emotionality, immediate reactions in a situation that calls for the masking of disappointment, and social competence/adjustment are investigated for 78 preschool children. It is found that children's immediate verbal/gestural reactions to disappointment partially mediated the relations between effortful control and social competence/adjustment.
