The search for glory in 'Madame Bovary': a Horneyan analysis
Article Abstract:
A Horneyan psychoanalytic approach provides insight into the narcissistic character of Emma Bovary in Flaubert's 'Madame Bovary.' An indulgent father seems to have given Emma a sense of superiority, which is fed by romantic and sentimental images in the culture. Emma's romantic search for glory is portrayed satirically by Flaubert, but he too seems to have been a frustrated romantic whose inner conflicts are reflected in his work. The novel repeatedly portrays a pattern of disenchantment, with vain hopes leading to disappointing results.

The psychoanalysis of ethnicity and the ethnicity of psychoanalysis
Article Abstract:
Ethnic psychoanalysis must surmount ethnocentrism and barriers of language to respond to disorders of ethnicity which may revolve around particular cultural practices or around assimilation into the dominant culture. Transcultural psychiatrists may have to work through interpreters or use a culture's folk medicine or traditions to approach an unresponsive patient. Often, interaction on a cultural level can help psychiatrists discover the roots and solutions for the patients' problems.
