Women and men in conversation: normal or neurotic?
Article Abstract:
Deborah Tannen's analysis of gender and conversational styles in 'You Just Don't Understand: Women and Men in Conversation' presents as normal behavior which Karen Horney has described as neurotic. The conversational style Tannen presents as normal for women resembles Horney's compliant character type, and Tannen's description of men's style resembles Horney's aggressive and detached character types. Therefore, Tannen's analysis may encourage neurotic individuals to view their behavior as normal. Lack of flexibility is the defining characteristic of neurotic behavior according to Horney.

Psychodynamic and systemic paradigms: an attempted integration in the light of personal experience with groups
Article Abstract:
Psychotherapist Karen Horney's psychodynamic theory is compared to autopoietic systems theory to determine if both approaches can be accommodated in practice and useful to the intervening therapist conducting a group therapy session. The human mind can be seen in terms of an autopoietic system and the change brought about by the therapeutic process occurs on two or more logical levels. The autopoietic systems theory may aid understanding of the relational phases and intrapsychic phases which Horney describes in her theory.

Project, process, and change
Article Abstract:
A psychiatrist describes how the psychoanalytical theories of Karen Horney have influenced his clinical approach and benefitted his patients. Horney's vision of man was that he could make choices, assume responsibility, and change and grow throughout life. She also believed that anxiety was a reaction to events in a person's life. Her vision of man was a positive one that encompassed constructive forces, and only when his drive for life is frustrated does he resort to destruction.
