The trouble with change: self-verification and allegiance to the self
Article Abstract:
The need for positive evaluations can be superceded by the need for the verification of self-views, particularly among those who have negative self-views. The awareness of self-verification processes can be used by therapists to help the development of changes in self-concept. People must have self-approval and the approval of interaction partners, such as colleagues and lovers, to develop and maintain positive self-views. However, people with negative self-views opt for partners who reinforce the negative self-view.

Self-verification and drug abusers: implications for treatment
Article Abstract:
People generally seek to gain feedback from other individuals that reinforces their own self-view, even when the self-view is negative or incorrect. Verification of self-view is not the same as empathy in psychotherapy, as in empathy the therapist acknowledges the individual's self-view but there is no suggestion that the therapist reinforces it. It is difficult to use verbal invalidation to change negative self-views, but logic could be used to make clients aware that they have contradictory views about themselves.

Embracing the bitter "truth": negative self-concepts and marital commitment
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that people with negative concepts of themselves tend to have relationships with people who see them as such, and that those people with positive self-views were more committed to spouses who thought highly of them as compared to those who think poorly of them. This implies thatpeople would rather have relationships with those who confirm their self- concepts.
