True imitative learning in pigeons
Article Abstract:
Pigeons learn to copy or imitate the topography of the response of another pigeon, even in the absence of differential social facilitation, local and stimulus enhancement. However, the mechanisms through which this imitation occurs is disputable. The imitating pigeon may be able to relate the proprioceptive stimulation of parts of its body to the visual stimulation of corresponding parts. The animal may also be able to understand the relations between the behavior and the resulting outcome of the other's behavior.

Animal cognition: the bridge between animal learning and human cognition
Article Abstract:
The study of cognitive processes in animals can be utilized to determine selective effects of certain drugs and how drug manipulations can be utilized to examine cognitive processes. Animal models have already been used to examine the reinforcing and punishing characteristics of drugs, and factors influencing drug addiction, tolerance and withdrawal. In addition, drugs may support a role in evaluating cognitive interpretations of experimental findings.

Can imitation in pigeons be explained by local enhancement together with trial-and-error learning?
Article Abstract:
Research shows that pigeons adopt learned behavioural responses through observation. Experiments using White Carneaux pigeons provide evidence that pigeons do not adopt the same learned behavioural responses through other mechanisms such as trial and error in the absence of observation. Thus, it can be concluded that pigeons learn by conspecific demonstration.
