Understanding chronic bulimia: a four psychologies approach
Article Abstract:
A comprehensive view of chronic bulimia is provided by integrating four psychological approaches, involving drive, ego, object relations and self psychology. Women with chronic bulimia tend to have problems at the preoedipal stage of development, exhibiting a confusion between oral and sexual drives with split-off aggression. Ego functions are impaired and primitive ego defenses are frequently employed. Object relations are ambivalent, with problems relating to both abandonment and intrusion. The self is poorly developed or empty, and the symptom provides narcissistic equilibrium.
