Voice of a hidden minority: identification and countertransference in the cross-cultural working alliance
Article Abstract:
Two case studies illustrate the use of 'associative identification,' a form of constructive countertransference, to facilitate cross-cultural therapeutic alliances. The therapist's experiences of culture conflict as a Jewish American paralleled that of a black man of West Indian heritage, who experienced the longing to be seen as himself rather than as an object of irrational fear, and that of a Korean American man, who experienced the desire to disidentify with his ethnic group. The identification of the analyst with these experiences enriched the treatment.

Induced recall of film music: an overlooked mirror of transference-countertransference interactions
Article Abstract:
The examination of film music in psychoanalytical discourse is important because of its evocative aspects and its role in transference and counter-transference interactions. Therapists and patients who enjoy music and film may be susceptible to forming these types of bonds, attaching significance to lyrics and situations. The music triggering these interactions may reveal the psychodynamics of how they are developed.

A glimpse of Zen practice within the realm of countertransference
Article Abstract:
A case example of countertransference illustrates how psychoanalysis can be deepened through the analyst's practice of Zen Buddhism. The therapist was able to use Zen awareness practice for microtracking during the countertransference process. The Zen practice facilitated close attention to physical and mental experience, which allowed a perceptual shift to take place.
