Why people vote: experimental evidence
Article Abstract:
A series of experiments in which the voter turnout decision is analyzed as a participation game is inspired by the model of Schram and Van Winden (1991). The model indicates that individuals favoring the same policy or candidate are members of a common reference group, as the vote decision is determined by inter- and intra-group relations. Results show that participation increases with group identity, communication enhances participation and participation is strongly related to individual characteristics.
