Working memory: activation limitations on retrieval
Article Abstract:
Task complexity reduces accuracy and latency of working memory performance, since working memory load affects retrieval from memory. Majority of the errors are misretrievals. The study requires subjects to hold a digit span while solving an algebraic equation and then recall the digit span. The results agree with the ACT-R cognition theory which assumes a limit on and division of source activation between two tasks. A three-way interaction seems to occur among span size, substitution, and task complexity.

History of success and current context in problem solving: combined influences on operator selection
Article Abstract:
Problem solvers combine the history of operator success and their perception of the effectiveness of the operator in the current problem solving situation for selecting an operator. These two influences refer to the learning and the performance processes, respectively. They act on the problem solver's operator selections. A computational model of building sticks task problem solving, which is developed within the ACT-R theory and integrates the influence of these two processes is discussed.

Does learning a complex task have to be complex?: a study in learning decomposition
Article Abstract:
This article investigates the processes involved in learning how to perform complex tasks. Findings indicate that complex tasks are made up of several simpler tasks that are learned by acquiring lower-level skills that facilitate the more complex global task when used in conjunction.
