7 ways to build a Web page
Article Abstract:
Seven Web page design programs offer the best control over graphical elements and strong cross-platform capability. Bare Bones Software's BBEdit 4.0 is a strong text editor designed specifically for HTML. Being a text editor, it cannot create image maps and other graphical objects. The remaining six programs offer a more WYSIWYG environment. Adobe Systems' PageMill 2.0 was one of the earliest WYSIWYG Web page designers. Unfortunately, it cannot convert image formats, specify fonts, or accommodate complex tables or text wraps. Claris' Home Page 2.0 offers a strong and intuitive interface, and includes conveniences such as a spell checker and pull-down menus for setting type styles and sizes. SoftQuad's HotMetal Pro 3.0 is still considered an HTML editor, but is taking on more of the features of a WYSIWYG design tool. Rules Checking prevents users from creating nonstandard HTML, and it generates very clean code.

1997 Impact Awards
Article Abstract:
Publish's 1997 Impact Awards recognizes 24 highly diverse, innovative, DTP-related hardware and software products. For example, ColorAge's DocuPress pre-press printer server has new proprietary variable compression technology that gives Xerox color copiers variable-data printing capability. The DocuPress server's low price should encourage the spread of variable-data printing. In addition, Ricoh's MP6200S, the first rewritable CD recorder, not only writes the new CD-RW discs, which are expected to last over 30 years and can be rewritten over 1,000 times, but also CD-R discs readable by any CD-ROM drive, as well as read any standard audio CD or CD-ROM. Moreover, Macromedia's Macromedia Flash provides vector-based animations for Web sites that are up to ten times more efficient than GIF animations. Macromedia Flash will probably be included in future Microsoft and Netscape browsers.
