Four image-management tools
Article Abstract:
Four image-management tools are reviewed. The products variously provide image-browsing, image-capture and file-conversion capabilities. All have reasonable organizational tools. G&A Imaging's $49.95 PhotoRecall Deluxe 2.0 consists of Library, Album, DarkRoom, and UtilityRoom utilities; the effort to mimic the real world makes the interface awkward. Ulead Systems' $29.95 Photo Explorer 4.2 is visually oriented and has a convenient two-pane window structure, but there are no image-adjustment controls. IMSI's $30 Graphics File Converter 3.0 is descended from a simple image-conversion tool and now has import and organization features. It stores Libraries as separate files and cannot import directly from scanners or cameras. The outdated 16-bit Windows interface is annoying. Ixla USA's $30 Ixla Explorer 1.2 opens with a clean two-pane window screen, but the program is otherwise poorly designed, limited in functionality and difficult to use.

Paint Shop Pro 5
Article Abstract:
Jasc Software's $99 Paint Shop Pro 5.0 paint software comes with a History window with unlimited undos, capability to provide multiple layers, full-color separations and device-independent color management. The program can read and write multilayer Photoshop (PSD) files as well as read over 40 file formats including progressive JPEG, FlashPix and Scitex CT. The program also supports pressure-sensitive input devices. One of the most useful features of paint Shop Pro 5.0 is that a right click on any Windows folder brings up the Browse With Paint Shop option and with another click the utility builds a thumbnail catalog of recognized graphic files. In spite of all its features, Paint Shop Pro 5.0 uses only minimal system resources.

Paint Shop Pro 4.0
Article Abstract:
JASC's $69 Paint Shop Pro 4.0 paint software is a comprehensive image-editing program notable for its bare-minimum system requirements and efficient interface. It may be too sparse for professional prepress work, making it an ideal companion program to Photoshop. The 32-bit, Windows 95-compliant application features a very efficient image browser. It is particularly effective for image conversion. Its new speedy special effects include a Buttonize tool, Chisel, Gradient Fill, Seamless Pattern and Hot Wax Coating. The color-enhancement and photo-retouching tools are as complete as those found in Photoshop. Paint Shop lacks support layers but provides a full palette of selection and masking tools.
