A word's worth a thousand pictures
Article Abstract:
Picturebase, from Symmetry Corp, s a powerful graphics filing system. The program, which costs $69.95, can handle images created by most clip art packages, as well as by most Macintosh drawing, painting, and scanning programs. User-created libraries can contain up to 5500 pictures; each picture, which is limited to 32K, can be searched by picture title, by keyword, or both. Libraries are displayed in Catalog windows, which contain all or part of the image most recently added to a library; arrows pointing left and right can be 'clicked' to page through a library. The Picturebase manual is weak; however, system owners receive a quarterly newsletter containing useful product information.

Illuminating Manuscript: Lotus's new technical word processor is a whiz at organization
Article Abstract:
Manuscript ($495), from Lotus Development Corp, is a new word processor. The program features a Structured mode, which operates like an outline processor, that is useful for organizing technical documents. Other notable features include a menu design for selecting global or local format options and a preview mode for displaying graphics and formatted pages before printing. Manuscript - which requires 512Kbytes (expanded memory is required for documents over 100 pages), a hard disk, a graphics board, and DOS 2.0 or later - is said to be suited to producing large documents; if you work with small- or medium-length documents the product is not recommended.

Kind words for Word
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Corp's Word 4.0 adds more features while streamlining the program. The most useful improvements are: the ability to save formatted text as a style to be reapplied elsewhere; and a search and replace function for formats and style. Word 4.0 still lacks an on-screen page review, however. The program costs $450.
