Paint jobs: testing the limits of four Macintosh paint programs
Article Abstract:
Four graphics programs for the Macintosh computer are reviewed: Macpaint ($125) from Apple Computer; Fullpaint ($99.95) from Ann Arbor Softworks; Superpaint ($99) from Silicon Beach Software; and Graphicworks ($79.95) from Mindscape. All four programs contain basic Macpaint features: spray can; paint bucket; a choice of fonts; and various lines, brushes, and fill patterns. Fullpaint, Superpaint, and Graphicworks improve on Macpaint in various ways: Fullpaint is an improvement on Macpaint's design; Superpaint can define shapes mathematically; and Graphicworks combines the ability to print Laserwriter fonts with page-layout capabilities. The programs are compared and contrasted. For most desktop publishing applications, Superpaint is judged to be the best.

Designer fractions: creating ready-to-use fractions with Fontographer
Article Abstract:
The Macintosh character set does not include fractions, but Altsys' Fontographer can manipulate characters in a PostScript typeface to generate a new font comprised of fractions. Creating one's own fraction requires a work disk with a skeleton system folder and copy of Fontographer. The Font/DA Mover is then used to install the screen fonts for the base font in the System file. The actual creation of the fraction requires copying, pasting, sizing, spacing and tweaking the separate elements until the desired character has been formed. The Generate PostScript and Generate Bitmap commands will make the printer- and screen-font files. The new font will automatically be assigned a an ID number by Fontographer.

Preventing gridlock
Article Abstract:
Gridmaker ($49), from Folkstone Design, is a three-dimensional drawing utility that helps you create three-dimensional letters or technical or architectural illustrations. The program allows you to construct grids for use in drawing programs such as Macdraw, Macdraft, and Cricket Draw. The grids include three-dimensional views of a plane, box, inside corner, and room. Finished drawings can be printed with or without the grids. The program is called 'helpful' for adding a dimension to drawings to create perspective illustrations.
