Arabian Horse World sets the pace
Article Abstract:
Arabian Horse World magazine, a specialty publication with a circulation of approximately 10,000, has moved from a 'pasteup' layout approach to QuarkXPress digital publishing and now does all of its processes directly using computer to plate (CTP) technology. CTP helps Arabian Horse World, now owned by K3 Magazines, control manufacturing costs. The magazine's printer, Publishers Press, began moving to CTP in 1994, and Arabian Horse World quickly recognized that it could leverage technology for cost advantages. Layout is still done in QuarkXPress, and color proofs are printed on a Tektronix 300i solid-ink printer. The magazine goes through as two-step pre-flight procedure, with every PostScript file converted into a composite JPEG image for viewing onscreen in Photoshop. On-screen blueline, created with Transverter Pro, imposes signatures and runs them through an imagesetter. The final PostScript files are shipped on Rorke hard-drive shuttles to Publishers Press.

That shifty baseline
Article Abstract:
Every page layout software application has a shift feature for moving a character above or below the baseline. A baseline is the invisible line on which characters sit. The baseline shift feature can be used as a part of the style sheet, allowing users to position two different paragraphs on the same line. This can be executed on a line-by-line or paragraph-by-paragraph basis. This feature should be made a part of the style sheet if it is going to be frequently used. Once incorporated, a user can type subheads to the right of body copy and then move them into place by applying the correct style. This process saves a tremendous amount of time and frustration. A step-by-step tutorial is offered using Adobe PageMaker and QuarkXPress as example products for executing baseline shifts in page layout.

Makeover: Bravo! Dramatic design!
Article Abstract:
A playbill for the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College is examined before and after the bill is redesigned using desktop computer graphics technology. The cover design of the playbill had relied solely on a performance hall graphic, but the introduction and text pages otherwise looked the same, were dull and made it difficult to find information. The Center's design team sought to bring drama and emotion to the bill and employed black and white contrast, varied type sizes and styles, and photographs in different shades of gray. The team used an Apple Macintosh IIcs microcomputer, software from Aldus and Adobe Systems Inc, and Adobe's Bodoni fonts.
