At your service: OPI servers streamline printing processes
Article Abstract:
Open Prepress Interface print and file server software programs quicken proofing and final printing, streamline operations and use preflight control to find potentially costly errors. Publishers can use OPI to manage file-swapping and yield high-resolution scans in-house. OPI delivers an image workflow-management system that is usable across a mix of hardware platforms and linkable to prepress systems. The four leading OPI software vendors, Xinet, Archetype, Helios Software and Adobe Systems are all offering OPI product upgrades for higher-end projects. OPI software should be purchased based on pre-existing or desired client and server platforms. Features to consider when evaluating a potential package include automatic file transferring, security features, workflow reporting, preflight error correcting and multiple print queues. A table of 14 companies and 17 OPI software server products is included.

All over the map
Article Abstract:
Digital map collections combine cartographic features with computer graphics capabilities. The resulting map-graphics software packages yield accurate, royalty-free maps, and because map collections discussed in this overview were created in software such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, Macromedia FreeHand and CorelDraw, the collections work well with those programs' layering and other abilities. Details are often segregated by layers or masks, which means users can easily select or deselect information. Map-graphics software varies from simple outline clip are to high-end packages that permit fine, customizable detail, starting with basics such as resizing, filling areas with color, changing fonts and adjusting line weights.

Well stocked
Article Abstract:
Royalty-free digital images on CD-ROM are easy-to-get alternatives for designers who do not have the time and the budget to spend for photo shoots or scanning. The content can vary from images of mountains to marbled background textures and they can be used as often as needed for free. Many come in Kodak's Photo CD format, others in TIFF or other bitmap formats that offer photos of higher quality than the compressed Photo CD images. Thirty five companies and their products are discussed.
