Attention part-time presenters; nine presentation packages that make you look good
Article Abstract:
Nine presentation packages are evaluated. Aldus Corp's $495 Aldus Persuasion 2.0 for Windows received the highest rating - five stars - of those packages that run on the IBM PC. Persuasion carries almost all the key features, is very easy to learn and supports most common import formats as well as a variety of output devices. Software Publishing Corp's $595 Harvard Graphics for Windows, four and a half stars, reigns supreme in the Windows features category, but some operations make the user wait while processing occurs. Lotus Development Corp's $495 Freelance Graphics for Windows, four stars, has solid features, a Smarticons tool to simplify editing, but users cannot enter text on note pages, and there are no handout or note masters. Other presentation packages evaluated include Claris Corp's $495 Hollywood, Microsoft Corp's $495 PowerPoint 2.0 (for MSDOS and Microsoft Windows) and $395 PowerPoint 2.01 (for the Macintosh), Micrografx Inc's $495 Charisma 2.1, Aldus' $495 Persuasion 2.0 for the Mac and Symantec Corp's $395 More 3.0.

Designs on a PC: Designer
Article Abstract:
Micrografx Inc's Designer is the most advanced graphics software package available for IBM PCs and compatibles. The $695 program requires 512Kbytes of memory (640Kbytes are recommended), DOS 3.0 or later, two disk drives (a hard disk is recommended), and a graphics card. Designer works with PostScript printers, Hewlett-Packard LaserJets and plotters, and other printers. The program brings to the PC features that up to now have only been available in Macintosh programs. Sixty-four drawing 'layers' act like transparencies and are useful for tracing templates; over 360 colors are provided. The screen in the program does not automatically scroll when the drawing hits the edge, and picas cannot be used as a unit of measure. Potential buyers should weigh the program's cost and sophistication against their needs.
