Convince 'em in color; Cricket Presents, Microsoft Powerpoint 2.0, Standout
Article Abstract:
Three slide presentation preparation programs allow users to produce graphics that can be processed by a photographic service bureau into color slides. All three run on the Macintosh Plus or Color Mac II. Of the three reviewed, Letraset Standout! has the most advanced word processing and graphic features. Cricket Presents had the best drawing tools, but there is little word processing ability and a limit of 64 colors. Microsoft Powerpoint was the easiest to use of the three. All three programs are high-priced but economical when compared to the services of a professional designer. Powerpoint and Standout each have a list price of $395, Cricket Presents is priced at $495.

Rudy VanderLans and Zuzana Licko: border crossings
Article Abstract:
Zuzana Licko and Rudy VanderLans publish Emigre magazine, a publication that is said to ignore boundaries in both the physical and the mental sense. For example, Emigre ignores the boundaries set by typographic conventions by featuring a coarse 'computery' dot-matrix type. Licko designs all the typefaces used in the magazine, saying that her designs grow organically out of the Mac's capabilities and limitations. Emigre, which has an 11-by-17-inch format, includes black-and-white photography, poetry, essays, computer art, and cartoons. The overall design is assembled into a narrative that points, both visually and verbally, in many directions at once.

Separating the pens from the mice
Article Abstract:
Choosing a personal-computer pointing device depends on the application: freehand illustrating or tracing is done best on a graphics tablet; a mouse is best for most desktop publishing applications. Mice come in two designs: mechanical and optical. Thirteen pointing devices for PCs are tested and compared; mice for Macs are considered in a seperate section. Trackballs, as alternatives to mice, are described and briefly discussed. There is information, too, about tablets. A table summarizes information about products and their manufacturers.
