Back to the drawing boards
Article Abstract:
Manufacturers of drawing tablets are competing for a share of the market, and in the process performance is improving, new features continue to be added and costs are diminishing. Presently almost all painting, drawing and image-editing software work best with a pressure-sensitive stylus-tablet combination. Manufacturers seeking to differentiate themselves are targeting business users and adding new features. Features such as tilt for line thicknesses and eraser devices are bringing Wacom, CalComp and Fractal Design Painter products in close competition. However, users should choose styluses which they feel comfortable handling, and trying them at trade shows is recommended. Other features users should be aware of are tracing aids, macro buttons and tablet size. Drawing tablets can now function on Macintosh, Windows, Unix and even Amiga platforms. Drawing tablets prices range from $175 to $400, and often come with bundled software.

A spot of color
Article Abstract:
A step-by-step discussion is presented on how to highlight one aspect of a photo with color utilizing a painterly method. The technique works by subtracting color from nearly all of a color image instead of adding color to a black-and-white image. Users can accomplish this by using the selection tools in an image-editing application, drawing a Bezier curve around the area to leave saturated, inverting the selection and desaturating the remaing areas. Another more appealing option is to duplicate the color impage and position the copy on top of the original, draw all of the color out of the copy and paint away parts of the top image to reveal the color underneath. The benefits of this method are numerous, including providing precise control over the amount of color applied and having the ability to quickly undo mistakes. Applications used to demonstrate this technique are discussed in detail.

Well-stocked Web sites
Article Abstract:
The stock-photo industry is moving to the Web. A variety of stock-photo agencies are now offering their images in digital form. The approach enables 24-hour access, the ability for users to conduct their own searches and online pricing. Web users can start their searches by entering the key words 'stock photo' into a Web search engine, such as Yahoo or Alta Vista. Many of the sites are merely marketing devices, but several stock agencies offer complete, digital services. Customers can search their Web sites, choose an image, find out its price, pay for it and download it without having to personally contact the agency. The approach is new, and companies are still experimenting with various ways to present and deliver their images. The offerings of six Web sites are listed.
