Points on the board
Article Abstract:
Imagen Corp's PC Publisher Kit provides a page description language for laser printers based on the Canon LBP-CX or SX engine that works with Ventura Publisher and with Pagemaker. PC Publisher Kit's list price of $1,895 ($1,995 for the Laserjet Series II) includes five scalable fonts. Imagen sells an additional eight fonts at a cost of $149.95 each. Tests against PostScript on an 8-page PC Pagemaker document and a 72-page Ventura Publisher document show PC Publisher Kit twice as fast as PostScript in printing the Pagemaker document and 20 to 50 percent faster in printing the Ventura Publisher document. Other advantages include easy hardware and software installation. Disadvantages are the inability to incorporate Encapsulated PostScript graphics into the document and the fact that few applications currently make use of PC Publisher Kit's advanced features.

Clones: the PostScript impersonators
Article Abstract:
PostScript language interpreters are being used by printer vendors and sold as clones of the Adobe PostScript-based products. Thirteen clones, of which four were Macintosh compatible, are compared to each other and also to Adobe products. Only three units were considered adequate and less-expensive substitutes: La Cie's Panther, Jasmine's Direct Print, and for the PC, Eicon Technologies' Eiconscript. The clones for the Mac were the only ones that could compete with Adobe PostScript-based machines for speed. The Eiconscript had a problem with handling graphics in that gray-shaded graphics printed solid black. The other reviewed PC products were inferior to Eiconscript in speed and cost-effectiveness. Although some were cheaper, they were also much less capable.

When speed is what you're after
Article Abstract:
The Lastermaster CAPCard printer controller board provides a significant speed boost to Ventura Publisher or PC Pagemaker users, and offers many of the PostScript special effects and font scaling that graphic designers need. The $1,395 CAPCard requires 640Kbytes and a hard disk. The card comes in two versions, one for the Canon SX engine printer and another for the Canon CX engine printer. Users will need additional hardware, depending on which card they require. Font upgrades are also available. The CAPCard is particularly recommended for Pagemaker users and publishers who use Windows- or GEM-based programs and who rely heavily on 300-dpi laser printers, although it cannot be used to print EPS graphics.
