Bridging the Color Gap; Laserpaint Color II
Article Abstract:
Laserpaint Color II adds commercial printing features to Laserware's Laserpaint 1.1 graphics program. The program permits the separation of four-color images and spot color overlay processing. Laserpaint Color II processes images from a variety of sources and can display up to 256 colors at once. Gray-scale images can be converted to single-color half-tones. A drawback of the program is its user interface. The program does not use standard Macintosh icons. It does not operate like other Macintosh graphics programs. However, the program is a good value to those who need its specific tasks. Laserpaint Color II requires a Macintosh II with at least two disk drives. The program lists for $595. An additional $25 is charged for non-copy protected disks.

Extending color
Article Abstract:
Color Extension from Aldus Corp is a Pagemaker 3.0 add-on that allows users to define, preview and separate colors within a publication. All colors assigned within the $195 program can be viewed on screen, and Color Extension can also display color TIFF files. Using a 24-bit or 32-bit video board and Apple's 32-bit Quickdraw, Color Extension will display a TIFF image in true color. Color Extension permits printing TIFF images as comps on color PostScript printers, meaning documents may be proofed before generating film separations. Color Extension, due to be shipped by Jul 1989, requires a Macintosh Plus, SE, II, IIx or IIcx; a hard disk; System 4.1 or later; and Finder 5.5 or later.

Do-it-yourself color separations: Pre-Press Technologies puts a full-color prepress lab on your desktop
Article Abstract:
Spectre Match and Spectre Print, from Pre-Press Technologies, are color-correction and color-separation software packages for the Macintosh and for the PC. Users have the opportunity to control the entire color-separation process and obtain results similar in quality to traditional separation methods. Investment is necessary in training, experimentation, hardware and software. The Mac system costs around $37,000 for the Mac II, a 24-bit display and a slide scanner; the equivalent PC system is priced at about $30,000.
