Bridging the bandwidth gap
Article Abstract:
George Gilder's bestselling book Telecosm: How Infinite Bandwidth Will Revolutionize Our World presents optimisic visions, but managers who must deal with actual realities still often encounter difficulties that are problematical to negotiate. For example, a survey by Jupiter Research reveals that although about 28 million, or 36 percent, of U.S. online households are expected to have high-speed Internet connections by 2005, 53 percent of survey respondents said they have no interest in acquiring broadband. This forces Web publishers to balance expectations of high-end users, who want media-rich services, against the more-basic requirements of narrowband users.

Radio redux
Article Abstract:
'Streamies,' a word invented by market researcher Arbitron, refers to people who tune in to Web radio's streaming content. About 35 percent of Internet users worldwide are streamies, which amounts to about 54 million people. Although this number does not represent a large overall percentage, it is regarded as an especially significant part of the market because it consists mostly of young and early middle-age professionals with an average annual household income of $66,000. The main advantage Web radio offers compared to conventional broadcast is its ability to provide an unlimited selection of channels.
