CD-ROM travels far with American Airlines
Article Abstract:
American Airlines' SABRE Travel Information Network Div (STIN) recently introduced SABREvision, an image-based information retrieval system for travel agencies. Using CD-ROM technology, travel agents can view images of more than 50,000 hotel properties and retrieve detailed features lists for selected hotels. Travel agents use American Airlines' SABRE network to access the graphically-based data base. SABREvision can also plot the location of a specific hotel in relationship to points of interest, such as an airport, using its own map-creation functions. The system operates under MS-DOS and works exclusively on IBM and AT&T computers. STIN uses a CD-ROM storage system because of its relatively low cost and its ability to provide local access to centrally-stored data. STIN executives are pleased with the overall system and with the fast CD-ROM software from OnLine Computer Systems.

Designer in motion: how one graphic artist moved into multimedia
Article Abstract:
Clement Mok, owner of Clement Mok designs in San Francisco, CA, uses computer graphics to design packaging, brochures and advertisements for clients such as Walt Disney Imagineering, REVO sunglasses and the Energy Foundation. Electronic graphic design guidelines, speccing type and color requirements are created for each project by Mok. The computer is viewed by Mok as a hybrid between television and the printed page as an artistic medium. Mok believes that anyone planning to enter the multimedia production business should consider the first few projects a learning experience, because the business is probably not going to make money in the beginning. The success of Clement Mok designs is attributed by the owner to his choice of core staff. Projects completed by staff members are critiqued by others who have not worked on the project and have a fresh perspective on the ideas.
