CG 400-PS: Compugraphic Corp
Article Abstract:
Compugraphic makes the $29,995 CG 400-PS PostScript printer, a floor-standing printer that is very fast on the Macintosh microcomputer, but is not so fast on a PC. The printer does not use a laser to charge its marking engine's drum, but uses an array of light-emitting diodes instead. The CG 400-PS can print 100,000 pages a month. The product's hard disk is loaded with 73 fonts. Small, crisp characters print at 400 dots an inch. Unfortunately, small thread-like vertical flaws mar solid black areas.

LZR 1260: Dataproducts Corp
Article Abstract:
Dataproducts's $7,995 LZR 1260 PostScript printer, rated best in these tests, outran all others except the costly Compugraphic CG 400-PS in printing long, mostly text Xpress and Ventura documents. The LZR 1260 is rated at 12 pages a minute by its manufacturer. Character definition is sharp, and blacks are 'robust'. However, black areas are not solidly uniform, showing patterns of vertical hairline defects.

Silentwriter LC 890: NEC Information Systems, Inc
Article Abstract:
NEC Information Systems's $4,795 Silentwriter LC 890 PostScript printer, incorporates attractive design innovations in front-panel controls, allowing choices of communications ports or emulation modes with the help of a well-illuminated LCD display. The printer is slow. And output is too light. Setting the density control to maximum, to correct this flaw, had a negligible effect.
