REBOL Technologies founder Carl Sassenrath says instant messaging (IM) is needed because e-mail and the Web do not provide everything businesses need in terms of Internet-enabled communications. IM is an effective, flexible communications arrangement that falls somewhere between e-mail and the telephone, offering some of the advantages of both. IM can be used for inter-office communications, or it can be used like e-mail, interconnecting a wide network of users. The fact that IM users can only be reached when they are online and want to be reached is particularly useful in some business applications.

Creative Director Barbara Kuhr has spearheaded several redesigns of the digizine, evolving into the current, no-nonsense interface. An internal Wired Desktop Group is placing the company's news content into online channels that stream information used in push technologies.
