Setting out on a path of your own
Article Abstract:
QuarkXPress 4.0 adds four tools that make it easy to create text paths of all types. These new capabilities combine with the new version's ability to change almost any shape into a text path to make text path creation a breeze. After drawing a text path with one of the tools, an insertion point indicates where letters will be. Character and paragraph attributes can be applied to change the text path's appearance and position. The new Text Path palette in the Modify dialog box can be used to alter text. Converting a text box to a Bezier line transforms the box into a text path for quick and easy creation of text paths of geometric shapes. Text can be run around such complex shapes as letterforms by selecting a text character, choosing the Text to Box command in the Style menu to convert the type outline to a picture box, choosing Text in the Content submenu from the Item menu to make the box a text box, and selecting the Bezier text path option in the Shape submenu.

Capital improvements made easy
Article Abstract:
Users can add dramatic emphasis to their documents by creating special initial capital letters in QuarkXPress 3.3 and 4.0, as well as in Adobe PageMaker 6.5. Both programs can create several kinds of initial dropped capitals: those hanging from indented text; those layered and kerned with the text; those filled with imported pictures; those created as a letterform and more. In QuarkXPress, users make a simple dropped cap by first clicking anywhere in the first paragraph with the text tool. Then, after selecting Formats from the Style menu, users select the Formats tab of the Paragraph Attributes dialog box and check the Drop Caps option box. Adobe PageMaker 6.5's Drop Cap plug-in makes creating drop caps particularly easy. Users click anywhere in a paragraph with the text tool, then select Drop-Cap from Plug-Ins, on the Utility Menu.
