Cool scanners heat up prepress market
Article Abstract:
Scitex America and ScanView have introduced sophisticated new flatbed scanners designed for prepress work that use cooler-running charged coupled devices (CCDs) than past products. The ScanView ScanMate F10 and Scitex Eversmart Supreme use new active cooling technology which the vendors claim improves CCD sensitivity in addition to reducing operating temperature. Scitex says its new technology gives the Eversmart Supreme a huge 4.3 dynamic range and maximum productivity of 70 scans per hour. ScanView's approach is similar, and the ScanMate F10 has a dynamic range of 4.0 as well as a zoom lens. The Scitex scanner combines thermoelectric cooling plates with fans and a special temperature-control board. The ScanMate keeps its scanning head stationary, using a fixed optic assembly and a scanning bed that moves along mirrors at each side of the lens. It offers a resolution of 5,600 dpi, double that of conventional prepress units.
