PageMaker's new owner, Adobe Systems Inc, has continued to improve the product and made PageMaker 6.0 a serious production tool. Bayer Corp's Agfa Division is recognized for its Agfa Alliance film products and the division's Chromapress is considered an outstanding short-run digital printing system. Apple's Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS may be the product to make color laser printers as familiar as other color technologies. Corbis Corp's Corbis Digital Archive receives recognition for its effort to protect the rights of photographers. Frame Technology Corp's FrameMaker 5.0 is the first to integrate online publishing tools. International Typeface Corp's ITC Bodoni is a font that has had a serious impact on the publishing industry. Apple's decision to license the Macintosh operating system has resulted in cheaper computers and systems that are tailored to the specific needs of the publishing industry.

Making the mold: how new products become industry standards

SanDisk's CompactFlash card and Digimarc's Picturemarc are examples of product designs that have become industry standards. SanDisk positioned its smaller standard memory cartridge for a wide variety of new miniature devices by allying itself with legendary electronics companies through the creation of the CompactFlash Assn. Picturemarc became the standard software solution for protecting digital photographic image copyrights through a bundling arrangement with licensed imaged manipulation programs.
