CorelDraw 7
Article Abstract:
Corel's $695 CorelDraw 7 for Windows 95 is a full-scale upgrade featuring extensive improvements to the interface, online tutorials, and new interactive tools. The application approaches the level of Freehand 7; further finetuning of the details should help CorelDraw reach its full potential as a professional graphics suite. CorelDraw 7 features a new interface that offers context-sensitive options, rather than large numbers of screen-cluttering palettes. CorelDraw's Hints online tutorial provides context-sensitive tips and tricks. The new version also includes improved scrolling and zoom options. CorelDraw's new interactive fill tool allows custom gradient and rate of fill; the new blend and transparency tools are similarly flexible. Corel's Photo-Paint application offers extensive brush options, multiple levels of Undo and Redo, and enhances transformation features. The easy to use interface allows for shortcuts to menu commands and tools.

QFX 5.27
Article Abstract:
Ron Scott Inc's $795 image processing software QFX 5.27 for Windows is difficult to use in spite of some innovative features. QFX's object-oriented image-composition capability lets users work with even large images in real time. It has better object-oriented editing capability than Photoshop and Micrografx Picture Publisher, but is inferior to Live Picture. QFX's masking and selection tools for straight image editing are often better than Photoshop's, but take some effort to understand. Core filtering capabilities in QFX are disappointing and seem inadequate for such a high-priced professional imaging tool. QFX has a special effects feature which lets users to pinch and warp images by dragging control points, but it is easy to lose track of the control points. The peculiarity about QFX is that it is easy to learn complex tasks like scripting and difficult to comprehend simple things like selection outlines.

Webtricity
Article Abstract:
Micrografx's $149 Webtricity image processing software is a better value than Micrografx's Graphics Suite 2, which comes with the same major applications, but costs $349. Both products come with the applications, image editor Picture Publisher 7, vector-based illustration program Designer 7 and 3D drawing program Simply 3D 2. Picture Publisher comes with animation features that are not found even in expensive software like Adobe Photoshop. However, Picture Publisher's filtering capabilities are not very strong. Simply 3D is Webtricity's main strength. The application can quickly create VRML sequences and GIF images. Creating and previewing 3D primitives and text takes only seconds with a Pentiun 133MHz computer. Designer is the object-oriented member of Webtricity, and is rather cumbersome to use, especially because of its drawing metaphor.
