Claris Home Page 2.0
Article Abstract:
Claris' $99 Claris Home Page 2.0 Web authoring software provides an intuitive visual interface with high-end design features without requiring developers to use HTML code. Home Page 2.0 includes File Transfer Protocol-compliant features, an integral spell-checker, greater control over establishing font types and four separate page-viewing alternatives. Home Page 2.0's integral text editor allows programmers to easily view and manipulate HTML code and then view the results instantly by reverting back to a WYSIWYG view. Home Page offers support for the majority of standard HTML 3.2 tags and many of the proprietary extensions offered by Microsoft and Netscape. However, the graphical nature of Home Page 2.0's design environment does cause occasional discrepancies between what developers intend to show and what Web site visitors actually see.

SiteMill 1.0
Article Abstract:
Adobe Systems' $595 SiteMill 1.0 HTML authoring program gives Web page designers the tools for checking HTML links and tags for accuracy. Links often break if a file name is changed, but remembering every single reference in a large Web site is almost impossible. SiteMill displays all files and folders in a single graphic window, and then checks every link and file name against the code. Any broken links will be displayed in the Errors window, the link can be easily corrected simply by moving the file to the location indicated on the link tag. SiteMill works extremely quickly, taking under a minute to check over 700 pages with graphics. The PageMill HTML editor is included with SiteMill, although SiteMill can analyze any Web site, regardless of authoring program. Upgrades for registered PageMill users are priced at $299.

Adobe PageMill 2.0
Article Abstract:
Adobe Systems' $149 PageMill 2.0 HTML editor offers users a basic Web design application, but lacks many of the features needed to create large or complex designs. While PageMill's HTML code appears fine in the software's built-in editor, it loses any extra spacing when viewed in a text editor, which makes it difficult to read or edit. The software also enforces strict syntax and preferences that complicate the addition of manual tags to the HTML code. PageMill indicates that it allows users to resize images, convert them from PICT to GIF and set transparency. However, it does not actually resize the images, but rather changes the height and width attributes in the image tag which can result in distorted images or files that take a long time to download.
