Covering all the bases
Article Abstract:
Video, audio, page and image files can be managed with the help of nine new programs. Cumulus Media Management System Network 3.0, IMAGE's Phrasea III, Alaras Tropix, MediaWay's MediaAssets 1.5, Luminous Technology's Luminous Media Manager 1.0 and Archetype's MediaBank 1.0 are built around a relational database-management system (RDBMS). RDBMS poses problems for handling terabytes of video and image data, particularly since a multimedia record's content is closed to SQL and other relational querying. Bulldog Group's Bulldog Software 1.6 unites RDMS' flexibility with the muscle of object-database frameworks. It correlates media assets to the steps of an enterprisewide workflow. Other programs include Dalim Imaging Software USA's object-oriented Galerie 1.0. and the cross-platform Extensis Fetch 2.0, scheduled for release in spring 1997.

Relational data: selecting a database that's right for your enterprise
Article Abstract:
Broadband availability has increased the importance of dynamic content on Web sites, and consequently, relational databases that can support dynamic content on enterprise networks are more popular than previously. Three of the most popular DBMS products include the following: Microsoft's SQL Server 7.0, Oracle's Oracle8i 3.0 and IBM's DB2 Universal Database 7.1. Although these products compete in the same market, they differ in various ways, such as licensing arrangements, targeted uses, hardware requirements and performance benchmarks.
