Creative firms bring prepress servers in-house
Article Abstract:
A recent study by TrendWatch indicates that the number of creative companies planning to buy their own network servers for pre-press production is up 20 percent. Choosing an operating system can be problematic; Mcintoshes make up the vast majority of the installed base, followed by Unix and Windows NT, but NT is rapidly gaining market share. Many expect NT to replace Unix because the OS delivers symmetric multiprocessing on systems that are usually less expensive than Unix workstations and offers more transparent Mac connectivity. Apple and Unix retain their niches, and industry analysts say there will be continuing roles for all three operating systems in the publishing industry. Silicon Graphics Inc hopes to make its powerful hardware a standard among prepress professionals who still need the power of Unix.

Linux for creatives
Article Abstract:
Web designers favor using the open source Linux operating system because of the software is regarded as network-friendly. The April 2000 Netcraft Web Server Survey (www.netcraft.com/survey) indicates that 61.5 percent of Web servers use the open source Apache Web server on Linux. An advantage of maintaining a Web site on a Linux machine is that a mirror of the site can be run on a desktop machine. Designers are able to avoid problems that typically occur when transferring files from one type of system to another by using a mirror to develop a site.

Apple Mac OS 9
Article Abstract:
Apple's Mac OS 9 operating system delivers much-anticipated features like TCP/IP file sharing and multi-user support. One of the most significant improvements is found in the powerful Sherlock 2 search utiltiy, which executes local and online searches, price comparisons, and other internet functions without the aid of a third party web browser. There are some incompatibility issues with older publishing applications still in use today, but they can be rectified by downloading patches from the company web site.
