MetaCreations Painter 6
Article Abstract:
MetaCreations' $399 Painter 6 paint software simulates such real media as chalk, markers, oil, watercolor, and pen and ink, and the new release adds computed brushstrokes, industry-standard layer support and enhanced impasto painting tools. The user interface has been improved by grouping tool interfaces in expandable palettes. The 'floaters' in previous versions have been converted to 'extensible layers' similar to those in Adobe's Photoshop. The brush engine paints with a series of one-pixel-width lines of color, making the package more responsive and allowing very smooth and natural brushstrokes to be created. Color can be applied at the bristle level for painting with several colors at once to simulate color mixing. Painter 5 limited use of impasto brushes to dynamic impasto layers, but now impasto features can be used on every layer and can be configured on a stroke-by-stroke basis. Painter 6 is easy to use despite its somewhat cluttered interface, and it offers very natural media effects.
