Easy spreadsheets: Ragtime 2
Article Abstract:
Cricket Software's $395 Ragtime 2.01 combines its page layout capabilities with an integrated spreadsheet feature for the easy preparation of financial documents. Text, picture, and spreadsheet frames that can be set to any size are used in structuring a document. The spreadsheet frames can be manipulated to sizes large enough to hold all data or small enough to focus on any particular area. Frames can also be overlapped or nested within others and they can have various border width and color. The Pipeline tool allows text to flow between frames and from page to page. Some shortcomings are visible, such as the slow mechanics involved with the Pipeline method and Ragtime's inability to solve page viewing deficiencies, but its word processor has been improved with useful features. Overall, Ragtime 2's spreadsheet features compare with those of Excel well enough to make it a good alternative.

Review portfolio
Article Abstract:
The four graphics software programs reviewed include Adobe System Inc's TrueForm, IMSI Presentation Graphics, Mycro-Tek Inc's AdWriter and ZSoft Corp's PC Paintbrush IV. Adobe TrueForm lists for $395, a four-pack or fill-out costs $295. TrueForm 2.0 solves the basic business problem of how to use existing forms on the Macintosh in an efficient manner. The $195 IMSI Presentation Graphics 4.0 offers limited formatting options and poor output quality which make it appropriate for only basic presentation uses. AdWriter 2.1 is pricey at $2,295, but has special features for automating production. PC Paintbrush IV lists for $99.95, $39.90 for the upgrade from any ZSoft product. As long as users stick to the small scanned images, quality is good with Paintbrush IV. Users may want to wait for PC Paintbrush IV Plus, due Oct 1990.

The secrets to formulas
Article Abstract:
Expressionist, $80 from Allan Bonadio Assoc, and Mathtype, $149 from Design Science, are Apple Macintosh programs that enable users to integrate mathematical formulas into word processing or page makeup programs. Both programs work as desk accessories or as stand-alone applications; equations are created from an array of templates and symbols, then inserted into text as graphics. Both programs are considered good values although the more expensive Mathtype is easier to use and produces better looking results.
