Electronic cruise control: producing a splashy 100-page catalog for Royal Cruise Lines is smooth sailing thanks to desktop tools
Article Abstract:
Vickers Design graphic designers Cathleen and Jeffrey Vickers employed QuarkXPress page layout software, Adobe Illustrator graphics software, OmniPage Professional optical character recognition software and other electronic publishing tools to design Royal Cruise Lines' (RCL) 100-page 1993 catalog. The couple won the contract by creating two proposal mock-ups through the use of QuarkXPress. Photographs for the mock-ups were mostly scanned from RCL files, but the actual catalog also included travel photographs from stock photographer Dave Houser that were scanned in using a Hell scanner, with color correction done with Adobe Photoshop or on Scitex workstations. Adobe illustrator was used to create the maps, while the actual page layouts were created with QuarkXPress. All files went to Printer George Rice and Sons, which converted them from PostScript to Scitex format for document-wide trapping and faster assembly and production of the 750,000-copy run. Details of the catalog design and production are discussed.

Anything but dull: a design project for Neenah Paper proves that uncoated stock can really shine
Article Abstract:
Paper manufacturer Neenah Paper hired Wages Design to produce promotional materials for Neenah that would challenge the capabilities of the uncoated stock the company produced. Neenah advertising and promotional Mgr Tom Wright was aware that many graphic designers were still hesitant to use uncoated stock for four-color projects. Consequently, Wright decided the next Neenah promotional materials would demonstrate how well or poorly the papers could reproduce a wide range of graphics without using tricks to improve the quality of the images. Wages Design team Raquel Miqueli and Melissa James learned that thorough planning and an understanding of the special properties of uncoated paper were vital to successful results. The team experimented with both conventional and waterless printing, unusual inks and a special halftone screening technique to achieve the desired print quality. Details of the development and production of the promotional materials are described.

A global view of electronic publishing
Article Abstract:
Electronic publishing is increasingly a global business, and the US is not only not the biggest single market but is not necessarily the most advanced. Smaller markets such as Israel have stronger ties between graphic design and production because the designers do more production work and must pay more attention to printing technologies. Emerging markets include many former Soviet republics which have produced skilled DTP workers, highly advanced printing industries and superb results. Such markets are not handicapped by a legacy infrastructure and are able to start from scratch or replace antiquated analog systems with all-digital ones. Russia has had a multiplatform focus for a long time; Poland is another nation where most DTP personnel spend time integrating multiple platforms. Magazines that focus exclusively on printing or graphic design have difficulty appealing to readers in such nations.
