Freelance Graphics for Windows 2.0, from Lotus Development Corp, and Compel 1.0, from Asymetrix, are both user-friendly business graphics packages. Freelance Graphics is priced at $495 and offers links to imported spreadsheet data and many chart styles. Compel is priced at $295 and offers more tools for sound, video and animation effects. Freelance has expanded file-import capabilities that include EPS support, AutoCad and 24-bit color graphics. The software requires a sound board or external sound device, EGA graphics and MS Windows 3.0. Compel fully supports all media types, including video, audio, animation and the Kodak Photo CD. Multimedia effects can be added to a presentation by selecting a menu option. Compel requires a sound board, CD-ROM drive, EGA graphics, an 80386-based microcomputer and 20Mbytes hard disk space.

Software Publishing Corp's Harvard Montage and Corel Corp's Corel Gallery 2.0 are among the newest and cheapest Windows-based applications for managing image files. They provide most of the features found in other Windows image management programs and include extensive clip media collections. Visual catalogs can be created with thumbnail versions of the stored images. Files can be indexed by key words, descriptions or subject and the programs provide search and sort functions for locating specific files. Both applications are a good choice for new image-management users. Harvard Montage's ability to manage presentation files makes it a good selection for presentation managers. Corel Gallery is a good choice for managing large collections of clip-art images. Harvard Montage is priced at $125, Corel Gallery 2.0 costs $99.

Digital Research's GEM Paint, Mouse Systems's PC Paint Plus, and Microsoft's Windows Paint are more basic versions of Publisher's Paintbrush and Halo DPE. The cost for each program is about $100. These packages do not include advanced drawing tools, nor can they use expanded. The GEM program is recommended for basic jobs such as editing simple images with straight lines. All three programs lack scanner support. The editing tools in Windows Paint are said to be the best, of these three programs.
