Hard choices: hardware advice for building the PC publishing system that lets you grow and prosper
Article Abstract:
MS-DOS based microcomputers are an excellent choice on which to base a desktop publishing system because of their economy and expandability, as is illustrated by a ten-step process building a starter system into a high-end system capable of advanced color image and video editing. A minimum configuration should consist of a 12MHz 80286-based machine, 40Mbyte hard disk, both 3.5- and 5.25-inch high-density floppy drives, 1Mbyte of system memory, high-quality mouse, monochrome VGA monitor and a PostScript-based laser printer. A high-quality dot-matrix printer with a PostScript emulation program can be substituted if a service bureau is nearby to produce high-resolution laser output. Each of the next nine steps is described. All new equipment should generate at least 120 percent of its value in new work, and the user is advised to actually have work that can justify the cost.

LaserPix 4.0: the LaserPix system gives Windows publishers high-resolution output from a 300-dpi laser printer - with a few compromises
Article Abstract:
The $1,950 LaserPix 4.0 board from XLI Corp (Woburn, MA) is basically a raster image processor that can produce cleaner text and halftones to 1,200 dots-per-inch (dpi) on several laser printers. The board employs a second board in the printer's input/output (I/O) slot and a video transfer cable to print the high-resolution graphics faster than at 300 dpi using the parallel port. Currently supported laser printers include Hewlett-Packard LaserJets, Canon LBP8 Mark III, DEC Laser 2150 and UMAX UL-300 Plus. Noted drawbacks are lack of a PostScript interpreter to support printing of EPS graphics and the appearance of horizontal scan lines in high-resolution images.
