Windows in technicolor: 24-bit color boards for Windows bring photorealistic color to the PC
Article Abstract:
Twenty-four-bit color graphics cards with Windows 3.0 drivers can display a palette of 16.8 million colors for photorealistic images that can be retouched, corrected or otherwise operated on. The three true-color graphics cards evaluated here are the Hercules Graphics Station Card, Truevision TARGA+64, and RasterOps 1024MC. A Window driver with 24-bit true color is due to ship in the 1st qtr of 1991. RasterOps' 1024MC is the board recommended for the most demanding color applications because it displays 24-bit color images at 1,024-by-768 resolution. This board is compatible only with Micro Channel Architecture PS/2s. The 1024MC lists for $4,395 and features VGA pass-through capability. IBM PC/AT and compatible machines can use the TARGA+64 ($2,495), which also comes in a version for Micro Channel computers. The Hercules Graphics Station Card ($1,495) from Hercules Computer Technology in Berkeley, CA, offers the best price for true color for AT owners. A compatible monitor that can receive information the 24-bit graphics card is transmitting is a requirement for all three systems. Additionally, it is necessary to have at least an 80386-based PC for minimal performance speed with large color files.

Color it Ventura
Article Abstract:
Producing spot-color overlays using Ventura Publisher 2.0 is described for a two-color brochure. Page layout, including where the colors will be used, is essential. Next the colors are defined using the Define Colors dialog box in the Paragraph menu. Ventura has eight default colors, six of which can be replaced with user defined colors. New colors are created by mixing percentages of cyan, magenta, yellow and black in increments of 0.2 percent, then saved under a name and either Enabled or Disabled. After saving chapter and style files under another name for proofing purposes, change the color settings for those spots that will not be black. This is done using a number of character or area specific commands. Printing out the separate overlays comes last, one sheet for black and one for the other color. Proofing can be with a PostScript color printer or on screen using a VGA screen and the 256-color VGA option on Ventura.

No escaping DOS: AST Premium Publisher
Article Abstract:
AST Research's Premium Publisher, Model 1 ($9,995) desktop publishing system is a complete turnkey package. The package includes the AST Premium-286 computer with a monochrome monitor. System options include an EGA monitor and the new Turbovision large-screen display (available Sep 1988). AST Research also offers a Turboscan called the Microtek 300A that is very dependable. The Premium-286 computer performs twice as fast as the original PC AT and runs Pagemaker in Microsoft Window's with ease. The Premium Publisher is not simple to install, because the printer and controller boards do not come pre-installed. AST Research provides a single manual for each component, which is inconvenient.
