Article Abstract:
A new generation of publishing software, for use on the World Wide Web (WWW), is emerging in the marketplace. The Web is the fastest-growing part of the Internet, and development tools for creating Web pages are proliferating. To understand the limitations of HTML authoring tools, it is important to realize that the Web was constructed for sharing scientific research. Little attention was paid to aesthetic considerations because the Web was designed primarily to ensure that all information could be displayed on any computer. Consequently, HTML has developed in a way that accommodates a network's least capable computer. HTML has evolved through three levels. Level 2.0 is currently in use, and Level 3.0 was drafted in Mar 1995 but has not yet been adopted as a standard by the IETF. Various authoring products are described, including conversion tools, PageMaker converters and FrameMaker converters. Choosing an HTML editor is discussed.

Macromedia Dreamweaver 1.0
Article Abstract:
Macromedia's $499 Dreamweaver is a powerful Web-authoring package that combines WYSIWYG design with the ability to directly edit HTML code for more flexibility. It fully integrates the popular BBEdit text editor from Bare Bones Software; users can work with both programs simultaneously, hand-editing HTML in one window and dragging and dropping graphics in another. The program supports cutting-edge HTML features not found in competitors, such as Dynamic HTML and Cascading Style Sheets. Dreamweaver promises not to alter users' existing HTML code regardless of the tags used, eliminating the rigid rules experienced users find infuriating in programs such as Adobe PageMill. The program is very multimedia-oriented and has a built-in timeline for developing animations and an extensible library of JavaScript behaviors. It is intended for professionals and has a steep learning curve.

Macromedia Dreamweaver 2
Article Abstract:
Macromedia's $299 Dreamweaver 2.0 is an improved version of the popular Web authoring program that will appeal to customers. The new version adds XML and automatic site management functions, and adds an array of useful HTML-based templates. Business features such as electronic commerce and database solutions are supported through Dreamweaver's open platform approach. Professional developers will appreciate the server-side support for files from third-party sources, although the inability to test information in advance can be problematic. Another good new feature is the tracer function, which enables programmers to add images quickly and easily.
