In sync with ColorSync: implementing color management may be challenging, but it's worth the effort
Article Abstract:
Apple's ColorSync system-level color-management software is the foundation of many color-management systems, but most publishers and designers still rely on color specialists to develop color-managed workflows. Color-management specialist Rods and Cones worked with design and marketing agency McDill Associates to implement color-management procedures, including viewing and correcting images and creating ColorSync profiles for printing processes used for newsprint, offset and photography. McDill maintains photographic images in RGB color and previews and proofs on calibrated monitors and printers before generating CMYK files to publications based on ColorSync profiles. Pacific Printing established a color-management workflow for its production system, which uses Macintoshes and imagesetters from Scitex and Agfa that are calibrated regularly for maximum halftone fidelity. Pilot Marketing Group helped advertising agency Fallon McElligott create a color-management system for ad design and preparation using Apple 20-inch Color Sync Displays and Canon CLC-1000 color laser printers.

101 hot tips
Article Abstract:
Publish's 101 annual tips for using ten of the latest creative publishing software applications, including Adobe Photoshop, QuarkXpress and CorelDraw for the Macintosh, are presented. The tips are divided into four categories: acquisition and imaging, design and illustration, layout and type, and online and onscreen. A tip from a graphic artist states that a pattern defined in Photoshop can also be a source for a rubber stamp tool. Another tip provides a technique of using Photoshop 4.0 to read Post Script files created by any program including QuarkXpress and PageMaker. A tip suggests a way to easily and quickly enhance black-and-white art work directly in QuarkXpress without the necessity of exporting the image into another application, colorizing it and importing it back. A non-printing perspective grid can be created in CorelDraw with the aid of the graph paper tool.
