Inside report
Article Abstract:
The electronic publishing industry is in a state of upheaval. Aside from the conflict between print and the Internet, changing product distribution methods are also affecting companies' success. Mature companies such as Linotype-Hell and Agfa have brought expertise and considerable engineering skill to the industry, but older methods of success may now just weigh a company down if it does not have brand identity and loyalty. Imagesetter sales are flat and companies are shifting to new products, such as low-cost scanners, printers and digital cameras. Consequently, manufacturers must move from selling expensive, high-end imagesetters, to a new focus on low-margin, high-volume items. These older prepress companies are inexperienced in the retail channel, and must now compete against experienced and well-known consumer electronics companies. The imagesetter market is expected to consolidate, and not all of the companies will make a successful transition from heavy iron to consumer goods.

Inside report: Scitex
Article Abstract:
Israel-based graphics equipment company Scitex is positioning itself for a digital printing and publishing future. Digital technology is threatening the future of film-based printing. The $700 million (1994 sales) Scitex, for example, foresees six types of largely digital visual communications services replacing current commercial printers, design studios, service bureaus and color trade shops. The new organizations will consist of creative services, digital trade services, information management services, reproduction services, distribution services and solution vendors. With this likely future in mind, Scitex now intends to be the leader in communicating digital visual information where everything can be tailored to the individual user or market. To realize that goal the company has developed new imagesetters, inkjet printing presses, and other tools, and acquired several companies. Recent printer introductions are briefly noted.

Two great firms, but only one great name
Article Abstract:
The proposed merger between MetaTools and Fractal Design illustrates the difficulty in creating innovative company names in the business world. The companies had hoped to name the combined firm MetaDesign, but that name is already being used by a full-service international design firm specializing in creating graphical design systems for companies such as Audi, Apple and CNet. MetaDesign is currently developing an innovative design architecture that stores the elements of a company's marketing and design identity on a single database, which also stores document templates. Each element has an accompanying instruction set that establishes guideline definitions for the use of all related documents. MetaDesign hopes to install additional functionality into this architecture that will automatically delete outdated versions of documents.
